Portrait, allegedly of Sappho, from Pompei

In his "Rhetoric" Aristotle quotes Sappho:

"to die is evil; for so have the gods judged it; otherwise they would have died."

I wrote a poem "Small Gods" which imagines a world in which Sappho is exactly wrong, and the gods are poor unfortunates who envy the living—and dying.

It can be read on the Ink, Sweat and Tears website.
